Think You Know Romeo and Juliet?

James Hartley, author of Cold Fire, which is based on Romeo and Juliet, says we might not know
the play as well as we think.

Valentine´s Day is upon us and, like it or not, everyone´s going to be talking about love. Someone,
somewhere – everywhere! - will mention cupid and someone, somewhere will mention Romeo
and Juliet. Everyone seems to think they know the play, but do they?
I write a series of books about teenagers at a magical school who get mixed up in the plots of
Shakespeare´s plays and the last book in the series, Cold Fire, was based on Romeo and Juliet.
During my research for the book, I found out some really interesting facts about the play. Not for
the first time, what everyone thinks they know about the play is not exactly the truth.
First things first, a few facts. Romeo and Juliet was written between 1591 and 1595. It was
published in 1597 and was a hit during Shakespeare´s time and has been popular ever since. Like
most of Shakespeare´s plays, it´s based on older stories and poems.
The story is about two teenagers in Verona, Italy, who fall in love but are not able to be together
because their families are great enemies. They run away together and get married anyway but the
tragedy really begins when Romeo is exiled from Verona for killing Juliet´s cousin (who isn´t happy
with the relationship, obviously).
Juliet´s family want her to marry another man so she gets a holy man to give her a potion that will
make her appear dead so she doesn´t have to marry the man – but she won´t be dead and Romeo
can come and wake her up and rescue her and they can live happily ever after. She takes the
potion and is laid in the family crypt. But Romeo doesn´t get the message that her death is fake
and when he gets back to Verona and sees her, he thinks she´s dead and kills himself.
When Juliet wakes up, she sees Romeo is dead and kills herself, so they ultimately commit suicide
after believing each other to be dead. Lovely!
So what about a few interesting facts?
Firstly, I guess you imagine Juliet as a girl when you think of the play. Well, yes, she is. But in
Shakespeare´s time women were not allowed to act on stage, so the part would have been taken
by a young man. That must have taken some strong acting for the play to be convincing!
Then there´s the famous line, “Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?” which everyone
seems to think means, “Romeo, Romeo, where are you?” In fact, it doesn´t. It means, “Romeo,
Romeo, why are you called Romeo?” Which makes it all really clear, doesn´t it? It probably means,
‘Oh, why did you have to be called Romeo Montague’, which makes him a big enemy of Juliet´s
family, the Capulets, but scholars are arguing about it.
Another big scene in the play is the balcony scene. There´s even a balcony in Verona where people
go and hold hands and coo and take photos to this day. But all the evidence points to the fact that
there was never a balcony scene in the play at all. In the play, Juliet appears “at a window”, and

English theatres in Shakespeare´s day didn’t have balconies. The whole balcony scene thing comes
from a much later staging of the play in which there was a balcony scene which everyone loved!
Finally, there´s the whole timescale of the play. The action takes place over a week. All that – fall in
love, get married, kill someone, run away, pretend to die, really die – takes place in a week. And
Juliet is thirteen years old. And at the start of the play, Romeo is actually in love with someone
else. Imagine trying to cram all that into a film or even a series these days – and make it believable
and make it so good that four hundred years later people are still reading it, still watching it and
can remember lines from it (even if they think the lines mean something else?)!
But that, in the end, is why the play is so popular. Why we still talk about it. Why everyone, even if
they don´t know the whole story, has heard of Romeo and Juliet. Because the story captures our
imagination and because the words, as difficult as they are sometimes, sing to us as they describe
the lovers´ incredible journey. It´s also why this Valentine´s Day you won´t be able to avoid hearing
their names!

This is my first post in almost a year and hasn't it gone fast. But I thought that I might try and get back to updating this blog, and see where it goes.

So here we go, the tween book blog's first blog post of 2019.

Unboxed by Non Pratt

Five best friends hid a box when they were 13. Five years later, four of them return to open it, overshadowed by the death of the fifth.

I read this book for a book club at school, and to be honest I probably wouldn't have finished it if I didn't have to. Unboxed is short, promising secrets and lies to come spilling out, however, the book has decisively few of these. Whilst I'm not going to tell you what they were (no spoilers, duh), I think that most people that read the book will be somewhat underwhelmed.

I think that my other main issue with Unboxed was the fact that very little actually happened in the book. I'm the sort of person who needs at least a little bit of action to happen in a book, and I found my self getting somewhat bored. The main characters didn't really have to overcome any challenges, and the few that they did have to lasted for three pages at most. Having said that, the main character did have to overcome one main "challenge", coming out to her friends, which took the entire book. The issue was, it took so long for her to get to the point, in a book where little else happened, that I found I didn't care the outcome by the end.

Having said all that, Unboxed wasn't all bad. The idea of a dead friend bringing all of these ex-friends back together was one that worked quite well, I thought. However, despite what the blurb says, very little time was spent on Millie. She was almost used as a plot device to get all her friends together, and then vaguely forgotten about until right at the end when a letter of hers was read out. I think if more had been developed about her relationship with the rest of the group, the book might have been better.

I am going to give the book a 5/10
and an age rating of 13+

So, I know that I haven't been written a blog post lately and so I thought that I would write about some of the best books that I have read in the past few months. So, here goes!

1) The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

To be fair, I have read THUG before, but I re read during the February half term, and it's such as good book!! I definitely recommend this book to pretty much anyone over the age of thirteen. It doesn't matter if you are no longer a teen, and if you don't normally read YA, it really is worth it!

2) Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

So, since I last wrote a post, I have started to read a bit of manga. Death Note (I finished the second volume only half an hour before writing this) has been my favourite so far. Its a thriller that keeps you on the edge at all times. It makes you question who the bad guys really are. And most of all, it's got a really good plot line at the same time! It's definitely worth the read, and I would recommend it to everyone over the age of 12, even if they have never read manga before!

3) Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

So, this isn't technically a YA book, but it really is very good. Eleanor Oliphant is a great book about Eleanor Oliphant (no surprise) who is trying to live with many secrets from the past. She, and many others, think that she is fine. However, she might not be as a-ok as she thinks that she is. Eleanor Oliphant is a great book that I would recommend to anyone 13+. This is probably the best book that I have read this year!

So there you have it! My favourite books that I have read so far this year! I hope that you try them and enjoy them, and maybe they'll make it into a similar list that some of you write!

The Weight of Water by Sarah Crossan

Kasienka, a twelve-year-old polish girl has just moved to England, to look for her father. She knows little English, and her peers know no Polish. How will she cope with new found friends, enemies, and lovers?

Sarah Crossan's The Weight of Water is written in verse. Whilst other books of hers, such as One and We Come Apart, work in verse, I do not think that The Weight of Water worked in a similar way. All it meant was that the book, which looked like your average sized book, was in fact very short. I did not feel like the poetry enriched the book, in fact, it felt like a lot of description was being taken away from the book in order to make it into a poem. Whilst, of course, poetry can often be the most descriptive type of writing, but for me, it just felt like everything was being skipped over. As well as this, short chapters made it quite hard for me to really connect with the characters. I didn't feel like I got to know Kasienka that well, let alone all of the other characters.

However, The Weight of Water wasn't all doom and gloom. I felt that the plot was solid, and actually quite enjoyable. The characters, whilst seeming to be distant, were still likable and it highlighted problems faced by many immigrants. These included on that happened at the beginning of the book, when a teacher assumes Kasienka wants to be called Cassie. Is this an act of Xenophobia? Or is this merely a teacher thinking that she is doing the right thing. As well as this, it highlights issues with bullying, especially with foreigners. Kasienka gets bullied herself, and many of the teachers seem to look away, or not notice. This is particularly relevant as last week was anti-bullying week.

I am going to give it a 7/5,
An age rating of 10+
So, as you can see, I just made quite a big difference to the appearance of my blog. It is now slightly less crazy, hopefully it is easier to read, and I think I like it a little bit more. But I want to know what you think, as your the readers, not me. I really appreciate your feedback, so whatever your thoughts, leave them in the comments down below!

Four Things that I Wish I Knew when I started blogging

If you are just starting up a book blog this is the post for you!

Welcome from all the blogging community! This is a post about

1. Blogging is really hard work!

At first, I thought that I would be able to output content three times a week, with properly in-depth posts. However, I soon realised that this was a lot harder than expected. For a start, I had just started a secondary school, and it wasn't easy to balance more homework, tiredness and blogging all in one. It didn't help that to blog you needed to read. Like lots of bookworms, I often forget what I liked and disliked about a book a couple of days after I read it. So if I read a book and then couldn't review it that night, I often ended up not reviewing it. The only thing that I could do was to keep at it, and not give up If I hadn't done that this post wouldn't be on this screen. So keep it up!

You can see my first post here!

Compare it to this post, you can see the difference can't you!

2. Do not expect ARC's and for Authors to give you free books!

If you search around a lot you can find posts about Publishers contacting bloggers about ARC's within a few months after starting their blogs. However, if you look at the time stamp of these posts, you can see that they are normally from quite a while back. This may because there are a lot more book bloggers now than there were back then, and therefore a lot more choice when it comes down to publishers choosing which blogs to send books to. I didn't receive my first ARC until well over a year after starting the blog. I consider myself to be quite lucky that I have received any at all, as they are definitely not a given, like some blog posts on the subject would have you believe.

3. There are others out there!

This might seem like quite an obvious tip. I mean, your reading this blog, right!? However, some people don't realise this and start a book blog thinking that it is something never done before. Whilst this isn't exactly what happened to me, I did think that there were a lot fewer bloggers than I now know there are. Seriously, the blogosphere is massive and getting bigger. You wouldn't believe how many book bloggers there are. So don't be surprised if your blog doesn't take off straight away.

4. Social Media is key!

As a blogger, I use Twitter constantly. I can use it to connect with other bloggers, as well as authors and publishers. As well as this, I can advertise knew blog posts with it. You may even be reading this post down to it! Other websites that I use are Facebook (you can see my facebook page here) and google+. If you are using Blogger to write your blog, then Google+ is especially useful, mainly because it is super easy to share your posts.

So there you have it, four things that I wish I knew when I started book blogging! I hope that you learnt something, that might help you if you are a new blogger! And, if you already have a blog, are there any other tips that you want to leave to future members of the Blogosphere? Whatever your thoughts, leave them in the comments below!

First News is a newspaper for young people.

I like the idea of first news. A broadsheet newspaper for children. I like that it is one of a kind, the only other thing like it is a magasine, not a newspaper.

The front page of First News definately draws you in. It has one big, bold headline in the middle of the page, and then a few other smaller ones down the side telling you whats else is in the paper. The news paper definately adresses all the news, not just dumbed down bits for kids, and the front page is the best place to see that. The article on it often adresses things such as brexit and other political situations, whilst managing to be un-biast, leaving it up to the children to look at all the evidence.
Opening onto page two, there is a list of 20 things to know and tell. Its a very quick roundup of some news that you can "read yourself and share with friends" For example, one of the sub-articles is about the royal bay, another about Daniel Craig and James Bond. I really like this page because it is good to read if you don't have much time to go through the enitre newspaper, you can have a quick look here. First News works well for children with busy lives.
Another thing that I like about the newspaper is the fact that it is clearly segmented. Each section has a header, followed by the news for that specific bit. For example, there is an animals section, an enterainment section, a gaming section and much more. This makes it easy for you to find the sections that you are interested in.

The one thing that I don't like about first news is the age range it says its for. The newspaper claims that it is a newspaper for seven to fourteen year olds, but from my experience, it is more like seven to eleven years old. The newspaper is definatley more of a childrens and tween thing than a teen thing.

All in all, I think that First News is a very good childrens newpaper! It is definately worth a look at.

I am going to give it an 8/10

A couple of months ago, I went to my first literature convention. It was fun, I came back with lots of books, but there were some things that I wish I knew about before going to there. So I have created a list of things that I feel are important to know about if going for the first time.

1. Bring A Bag

Even if you don't have any money on you at all, the likelyhood is that you will come home with a few books (or nine), a lot of badges, some tasters and more. I didn't turn up with a bag, and to be honest found myself kind of lucky as one stall was giving them away for free as a promotion, but I am not sure if this is the same for other conventions. Also, a bag is useful for bringing books in with you to be signed by your favourite authors!

2. Check The Schedule

Remember to check the schedule for the convention before hand, so that you know what book to bring. If your favourite author is there on a day that you're not, it may be worth bringing a book anyway. I thought Lisa Williamson was only there on the first day, but saw her on the second, WITHOUT a book for her to sign. Doh.

3. Bring Water

Book conventions will be stuffy. There will be lots of people who are probably quite close to each other if you are waiting in a queue. It works the same way penguins huddling does, with your body heat warming them up and vice versa. You will need to keep hydrated, and the water that you buy there ill probably be quite exspensive as you are trapped inside the building.

4. Twitter is Key

At least at YALC, the book convention I went to, it was. It had its own hashtag where publishers and authors might tell you to come running to their stand and do something silly to win a book. Sometimes the prize was even an ARC. At YALC I bought two books, and yet came back with 11. I would have bought back even more, but I only discovered the hashtag on the second day, and so therefor I probably would have bought back more on that day. Remember to start the day on a full battery, as you may be on it quite a lot, constantly refrehing Twitter.

5. Wear Comfy Shoes

You will probably be doing a lot of walking around, and so should high heels are probably not the best option. I would suggest comfy trainers. Remember, there may even be some running at times, to be the first to the stall to win a book.

6. Bring Money

There are plenty of good deals around at book conventions. Whether its three paperbacks for only ten pounds, or two hard backs for fifteen, all the books will be at a reduced price. You should definatley bring money to benifit from it all.

7. Finally, Stick Around

If you are there for the entire thing, or even just the last day, stick aroud until right at the end of the last day. There are plenty of giveaways, as publishers need to get rid of some of the merchandise they have bought with them. As well as that, most people have gone home so there is less competition.

So there we have it, my beginners tips on your first book convention. I hope they have been informative and help you get through yours!

Ollie and Moritz are best friends, yet they can never meet. This is because Ollie is allergic to electricity, meaning either he has a fit when he nears it, or the electricity goes off. Moritz has no eyes, and can see through echolocation, but that is not the reason why they can't meet. Moritz has an electric heart, and them meeting would kill him.

With Ollie now on a roadtrip, to find other "Blunderkids", and Moritz trying to fit in in a new school, how will their corresponence keep up, and what will they find out a long the way...

I liked Nowhere Near You! It was a good follow up to Because You'll Never Meet Me, a book I enjoyed greatly. At times it was funny, at times it was sad. I liked that it was a new take on the whole "first person two points of view" thing, that is now so common in the books we read. I must say, I loved Ollie's personality, all bubbly, and trying to make people smile. I wasn't so sure about Moritz's, as it was a little bit darker, but then again, after all he had been through, I guess that was acceptable. The Author, Leah Thomas, did a good job at imagining all the different 'Blunderkinder', their dissabilities/superpowers were very imaginitive, as were their personalities. My favourite was Arthur, who was cool, happy, friendly, and was fragile and yet not fragile at the same time.

One of the only things that I didn't get was why Ollie was dangerous to cars. Of course, electric cars would be a problem, but diesel and petrol cars? (This probably shows you my lack of knowledge in cars, if I am incorrect about the use of electricity in cars please comment)

I am going to give it an 8/10

And an age rating of 12+#

Whilst the old one was clunky, and you couldn't read what it said, this one feels refreshingly bright!
↓↓↓↓↓↓↓But what do YOU think? Feel free to comment your feelings about it below! ↓↓↓↓↓↓↓nathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13795248911600495198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1329118361598576103.post-81480296067551097562017-07-31T20:55:00.000+01:002017-07-31T20:55:11.070+01:00OtherworldOtherworld by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller

Simon and Kat are best friends, or at least they were until around 16 months ago. Simon moved away, and when he returned, Kat was different...
The Company has just released a new VR app. One so immersive you will never want to leave...
Then, when Kat is found in a coma after an illegal party she is diagnosed with locked in syndrome. The Company offer her a way out, a way that she can live inside the virtual reality app that they have created. Simon thinks there is a hitch. He wants to try it, make sure it is safe for his friend, but when he gets the chance, he finds out much more than he bargained for...

I could hardly put Otherworld down!!! I was literally reading it everywhere, on the bus, at the playground, whilst I was walking and in shops. What was so captivating was that there was new action around pretty much every corner. You couldn't put it down because there was never a moment where you wanted to put it, you were never bored. I loved the plot as AI and VR are both subjects that I am greatly interested in! The equipment was well thought up, as it was advanced enough to seem different and better, and yet it was not so crazily extreme that you couldn't believe in it. I can easily see something like Otherworld happening in the next few decades, maybe sooner. Having read the book, I can say that is a scary thought. First person worked, probably because over half of the book took place in Simons head. Anything else would have just been weird!

The thing that could have been worked on was the love story between Simon and Kat. Whilst many characters said that Simon obviously loved Kat, you didn't really feel that in the way he talked about her until way into the book. You knew that they were friends, but you didn't realise that they liked each other in that sense. There could have been a little more love in his thoughts.

I'm going to give it an 8/10

The Devils Poetry by Louise Cole

The world is about to be thrown into a world war. If the peace talks in London don't succeed, then no one will be safe. Callie, a seventeen year old girl, is just one of the many young people who will be forced to fight. But then, a chance is offered to Callie to save the world. And it comes in the form of a young man with a book...
But, this comes with a price. The dangerous Cadaveri want, even need, to stop her from reading the book, and succeeding in her mission to bring world peace.

On the whole, I liked The Devils Poetry. Whilst I cannot say that it is my new favorite, like I do with some books, it was certainly a page turner. Every time you turned over you were thrown into a new gripping scene. Especially at the end, I found it quite hard to put it down, I was so enthralled by the book. As well as this, I liked the poetry in the book. Not only did Louise Cole have to write a book, she had to write poetry, and I thought she did a very good job at it. Sometimes, in books like these, you find yourself skipping over the poetry, as it might feel out of place, or just boring. But not the poetry in this book. It was exciting, and had a nice rhythm to it. Callie, the main character, was very likable, and written in such a way that you could get behind pretty much all of her opinions. She was caring of her friends, as well as being a book worm, which always goes down well with me.

Now, there were unfortunately ya few parts of the book that I didn't like so much. For example. I was never really sure who the Cadaveri actually were, and why they wanted to stop the reading. The reason for this lack of explanation was that supposedly, nobody knows, but I didn't find that satisfactory. I feel it could have been developed a bit better. The other thing that I didn't like was that it kept slipping from first person when they were with Callie, to third person when she wasn't there, with almost no warning whatsoever. I did at points find this confusing

So, in conclusion, it was a interesting, thrilling book, with a few things that could have been improved.

I am going to give it an 8/10
and an age rating of 12+

Florian was tricked by his Nazi employer, and is now escaping Germany.
Joana was forced to flee from her country, and is now escaping Germany.
Emilia had to leave, after her father was killed, and is now escaping Germany.
Alfred is a Nazi sailor, on the ship thats going to get them out of there.
Four people, one amazing story. The tale of the Wilhelm Gustloff.

I think that salt to the sea migbt be my new favourite book! The plot was outstanding, and a great way to tell everyone about the greatest maritime disaster of all time. I couldn't put it down, enraptured in the story. I loved the way every single character was written, although I cannot say that I loved every single character. Whilst the characters of Florian, Joana and Emilia were really nice, Alfred was not. He agreed with Hitler in everything he did, and had even written a (Rather rubbish) song about the enemies of the Nazis. I found myself skipping out most of the bits narrated by Alfred, not just because he was horrible, but becasue they were also mostly letters written in his head to the love of his life.

The main thing I loved of the book was all the twists and turns. You never quite knew what was going to happen next. One second they could be fine, the next second they could be plunged into extreme danger. Another thing I liked was the theme of art in the second world war. The book actually taught me some new facts about the war that I didn't know, such as that the Wilhelm Gusloff even existed, or that Hitler stole many great works of art, mostly from Poland, in the war.

Now, I am a sucker for a good cover, and Salt to the Sea was no different. Featuring a barbed wire fence seemingly turning into birds, it really did represent the book, and what it was about.

Salt to the Sea was shortlisted for the carnegie award, which is going to be announced next Monday. Having read all of the books but one I really hope that it wins. Good Luck to Ruta Sepetys!

I am going to give it a 9.5/10
and an age rating of 12+
I just remebered this!!

This was me a few years ago, having an epic tantrum!!!nathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13795248911600495198noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1329118361598576103.post-889862395121150442017-05-17T18:20:00.001+01:002017-06-01T14:41:17.271+01:00MoonlocketMoonlocket by Peter Bunzl

If you haven't already read the first in the series, you can find the review for Cogheart here

Lily and Robert are back with a new adventure! The noturious escape artist Jack Door has broken out of jail! On a visit to Roberts old house they find him staying there but he escapes. What they also find is a cresent moon locket with a map on the back. Will this lead Robert towards his mother, and what does Jack Door have to do with it?

Normally, the sequel to a great book is generally never quite as good. But Moonlocket was as good, maybe even better! I loved the adventure, the thrill and at times the terror. You never knew what was going to happen next. It was full of suprises. To be honest most of the best bits were the same as the last book. I loved the idea of mechanimals. I loved airships. I loved the focus on the Cogheart. And there was also new good things, such as the search for Roberts family (And family in general). I think my favourite character was Tolly, a street urchin. He was such a clever idea for a character. Someone who is unlickely to be of any assistance, yet becomes a main character by the end. Also, Tolly said some really insightful things. There was also a theme of independence. Lilys dad thinks that she is vunerable due to the Cogheart, and how people treat hybrids. But Lily actually goes against him, deciding to prove that she CAN do what she wants. I liked this theme, even if it is a common one in YA and childrens literature.

The one thing that I didn't like was the character of Finlo. He is Jack doors son. I didn't feel hat he was necessary, and I could do was feel sorry for him, even at the end. Also, when the climax was at its highest point, everything had just been revealed, and then there was a bit between Finlo and Jack that I thought was very unnecassary.

I am going to give it a 10/10
and and age rating of 10+

In debating today, we had to speak on whether TV was more educational than books. Of course,a s a book blogger, I spoke on the side of the books, but it did make me wonder. So I thought I would write a blog post about it, if not only to solidify my own thoughts on the matter...

So first, the Pros and Cons of both sides:

Books

Books develop your language and your imagination.

When you start reading you start with a book with easy vocabulary, and gradually progress, where as when watching television, everything is dumbed down so that the channel can get as higher ratings as possible.

As for your imagination, when you are reading, you can imagine a character in any way you want, whereas whilst watching TV you are just sat there, not exercising your imagination at all.

However, and I am sure plenty of books bloggers will agree with me here, books are expensive. Not everyone has enough money to buy books, sadly. Also, with all those trees being cut down to create the paper, some might say that it is bad for the environment.

TV

Many people find it is easier to learn in a visual way, using things such as TV. With things such as documentaries, it has never been easier to learn from television.

Also, with TV, you don't need to learn how to do anything to do it (Unlike books where you have to learn to read.)

However, televisions are expensive, maybe even more so than books. Also, you need electricity to watch TV as well.

But I decided to ask twitter...

And, with a grand old total of ONE PERSON* voting by the time I wrote this post, I can safely say that 100% percent of twitter think that books are better...

But what do you think?
Are books better?
Or is TV more your cup of tea?

↓I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments↓

*Shoutout to whoever that was. You know who you are, even if I don't (Twitter is weird like that)

Dougal Daley is dead. Deader than dead. The deadest there is. This is beacuse:

A) The creature in his shed wants to eat him

B) His family and friends want to kill him and it's not his fault!! He hasn't done anything!!!

Dougal Daley, It's Not My Fault is a funny younger childrens book. Whilst it is not what I would normally read, I was surprised to find myself really enjoying the humour of the book. My favourite parts were when Dougal was writing his will, I thought that it was funny that someone of that age was thinking so much about death. It was also funny that the title were things like "I, Dougal Daley, am even deader than before." The best bit about it was that half the time he wasn't even about to die, he was just scared of his parents. Dougal would keep writing notes to the police that if they ever found him killed in a certain way, then it would have been so and so (Normally his annoying older sister). On the subject of sister, there was always a funny brother and sister rivalry going on. Once or twice, it was her fault that he was in trouble. Dougal couldn't spell <strike>Sibble</strike> Sybil. Sybil, as well as everyone else, interjected into his writing, with notes that could sort of give you their perspective. I thought that it was brilliant that it was written from Dougal's perspective, as you mainly got his perspective when telling the story. This generally involved blaming someone else at the beginning. "Well, it was the hamster who started it really", or something like that.
Now, onto the illustrations. These were brilliant, cartoonish pictures that were inserted into the book. Often, they might tell a story in there own, or add to the story. They reminded me of a mix between the Beano and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Finally, onto someone elses opinion. One of my younger brothers is much closer to the age that the book is meant for. whilst he hasn't yet read the entire thing, as I was writing this review, he was reading out one of the pages nearer the start in fits of laughter.

I am going to give it an 8/10

Close Your Eyes is about a school shooting which we discover through a series of different formats, all leading us to the discovery of who was <strike>the</strike> behind it.

So, let's start with what genre it was. I would say a YA mystery, but that is debatable as the whole point of a mystery is that everyone finds out who done it at the end of the book. In Close Your Eyes, you were the only person that had no idea what was going on. I'd never encountered a book like it, all the other mystery books i have read, NO ONE knows who did it until the end. It was also a thriller, I mean it was about a school shooting! Onto the format. As previously hinted at, it was told in many different ways, the two most common of which were sections of interviews, as well as more traditional storytelling. Other formats included facebook and whatsapp messaging and excerpts from a private blog. It was a super interesting writing style, as you got to see inside the main characters' minds. In the interviews, you could really feel the different personalities of the characters, things like Gemma, one of the main characters, calling the interviewer babe. Still on the interviews, you never actually read what the interviewer had asked, yet from the way that Nicci Cloke wrote it, you still knew what it was, even if the question wasn't that obvious. Sometimes, the interviewee's would say something that had already been mentioned by someone else, or in the story part of it. This gave you a sense that they were backing up what had already been said, making it more realistic! To be honest, I couldn't think of anything that bad to say about it, except that it was quite sad and gruesome, as if the writing had a grey cloud hung over it. However, this might have been on purpose!

I am going to give it a 9/10
and an age rating of 14+

The rules are that:

You must be honest

You can't not answer a question

You have to tag at least four people

Here we go...

Which book has been on your shelves the longest?

The oldest book is one of my Grandpa's Asimov's, although that it a fairly new addition to my own collection. I would say that the one thats been their the longest is a copy of James and the Giant peach by Roald Dahl.

What is your current read, your last read and the book you'll read next?

My last read was Close Your Eyes by Nicci Cloke, my current read is the Cardturner by Louis Sachar, and who knows what my next read will be. Probably something that I pick up in the school library.

What book(s) did everyone like that you hated?

I actually wrote a post about this one. The book in question was The Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger.

Which book do you keep telling yourself you'll read, but probably won't?

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. I just can't bring myself to do it.

Which books are you saving for "retirement"?

I have absolutely no idea, and I generally don't know what I am going to read next, unless I have been given a recommendation.

Last Page: Read it first or wait till the end?

No, just no. It spoils the entire thing!

Acknowledgments: waste of ink and paper or interesting side?

I don't think that it is a waste of ink and paper, those people deserve to be thanked, yet I don't always read it as it generally isn't the most interesting part of the book.

Which book character would you switch places with?

Probably Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He has a grim beginning but life is pretty good by the end. Or maybe Alton from The Cardturner. I don't think that life was too hard for him.

Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in life?

Not that I can remember I don't. Any book where the main character has a love of reading and/or coding.

Name a book that you acquired in some interesting way.

Probably the most interesting are all the books that I won with Book Bingo in my primary school. I can't remember any specifically, but I think that it is a cool way to get books.

Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?

I can't say that I've really given books away, but I do sometimes lend them to relatives.

Which book has been with you the most places?

I think that it is probably Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. That was the first book I got on my kindle, and I bring that with me on most holidays.

Any "Required reading" you hated in high school that wasn't too bad two years later?

When I first read Shakespeare with school, I didn't really like it, and was annoyed that we had to do a Shakespeare play as our school play, after spending a term studying him and his plays. But now I don't think that it is too bad!

What's the strangest item you've ever found in a book?

Nothing really springs to mind...

Have you ever read a Dan Brown?

Nope!

Have you ever seen a movie that you liked better than the book?

The harry potter series was alright... But then so were the books, so I'm not really sure if that's a proper answer!

A book that NEVER should have been published?

I have a tendency of liking most of the books I read. And even if I don't like them, I don't passionately hate them. All books have a right to be published.

Have you ever read a book that makes you hungry, cookbooks bing included from this question?

Going back to Harry Potter, any of the feasts in the great hall make me feel really hungry!

Who is the person whose book advice you'll always take?

The librarians at my school. (More than one person but WHATEVER!)

Cassie is a black girl growing up in the early twentieth century in America. She is young, and doesn't understand why the White Children's school bus always splashes her on the way to school. Why they even have a school bus. And she doesn't understand the 'night men' and what they have been doing. Why are they all so mean to her, when God created them all equal? Cassie begins to find out, and as she does, so do we...

The first thing I liked about Roll of Thunder was that it is a non-fiction book hidden in a fiction book. Whilst the actual story is made up, you get to learn a bit about American history. This was interesting for me as I live in Britain, go to a British school, and so therefore I mostly learn about British history. Learning about something else was a change, especially in the form of an excellent fiction book. When i first saw Roll of Thunder, I thought it was going to be a bit boring. The cover didn't really fit in with what you would expect a book to have as its cover nowadays (Although this is just the cover of the version I read. A quick search on the internet proves that there are quite a few different versions). I am sad to admit that I do sometimes judge a book by its cover, and so therefore probably wouldn't have picked up Roll of Thunder if I hadn't heard it was such a good book. Now, onto the actual plot. It was a good story as a whole, with what felt like quite a few side stories (Like Forrest Gump, which I recently watched). Like so many of the books I seem to be reading recently, it was very hard hitting, with many sad and shocking parts. There was also a lot of bad language, mostly against black people. This only added to how realistic the book was in describing what life was like for black people in North America in the early 20th century. I thought it was good that it was told from Cassie's perspective, and not any of her siblings. If it had been told from anyone else's perspective, then there would be no story, as either the narrator would either know not enough, or too much, about the world around them.

I am going to give it an 8/10
And an age rating of 13+

A Non-Fiction book on survivors throughout history. From Shakelton's Expedition to two men who shared a sandwich at the bottom of the sea, some of the best stories of survivors you will have read yet.

ok, so lets start with the tales. They were written in such a way that it would interest people of all ages. It was interesting for my age, would have been interesting for older people and it was written is such a way that anyone younger than I am could still have understood it very easily, with the trickier parts explained, so that everyone could benefit from the awesome stories. i think that my favourite story was about the guy who had to operate on himself with no antibiotics. That was pretty hard hitting, but also an excellent short story.

Now, onto the illustrations. As the pictures will show, these were absolutely amazing. You would expect real life photos in a non-fiction book, but no, these were definitely drawn. At the bottom of each page, there was a nice pattern, but that wasn't the best part. There were some absolutely AMAZING double page spreads, showing all the disasters. This was probably useful, as firstly, images probably aren't that readily available, and secondly, images would probably have been a tiny bit too graphic. At the top of each chapter, there was another little illustration. I think that the illustrations were probably some of the best pieces of book artwork that I have ever seen. You might as well just buy the book for it's illustrations, they were that good.

So yeah, if you didn't realise, I liked the book. It's now my favourite non-fiction book...

I am going to give it a 10/10,
And an age rating of 8+
